What is the meaning of fear:
In Islamic thought, fear of Allah (khawf min Allah) is a key spiritual quality and one of the central aspects of faith. It is often paired with hope in Allah’s mercy, creating a balance that drives a believer toward righteousness while avoiding despair or complacency.
The Meaning of Fear of Allah
1. Consciousness of Accountability: Fear of Allah is the awareness that every action, thought, and intention will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment. This consciousness deters a person from sinning and encourages striving for good deeds.
2. Reverence and Awe: It reflects the believer’s recognition of Allah’s greatness, justice, and majesty. This fear is not a debilitating terror but a respectful awareness that encourages submission and humility before Allah.
3. Love-Fueled Fear: This fear arises out of love for Allah and a desire not to displease Him. It is different from worldly fears, as it brings one closer to Allah rather than driving them away.
Qur’anic and Prophetic Teachings on Fear of Allah
1. The Qur’an frequently emphasizes the concept of taqwa (God-consciousness), which encompasses fear of Allah:
• “And fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:194)
• “But for he who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from desires, Paradise will be his abode.” (Surah An-Nazi’at 79:40-41)
2. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
• “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done with sincerity and the fear of Allah in the heart.”
• “Fear Allah wherever you are, and follow up a bad deed with a good one, and it will wipe it out.” (Tirmidhi)
